The Sebring Local School District is proud to present Mrs. Nicole Mathias as our nominee for "Educator of the Year".

Mrs. Mathias' dedication to our district is exemplary. She pours her heart into her classroom and encourages each of her students' unique abilities to shine! Mrs. Mathias continually connects our district to the surrounding Sebring community, inspiring a greater perspective in each of her students. Always a listening ear, and the first to raise her hand when there is a need, we are fortunate to have Mrs. Mathias as a Trojan!

Mrs. Mathias will represent our district at next week's Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber's "Educator of the Year" awards ceremony. Please join us in congratulating her!

School Resource Officer Day fell over the weekend but we didn't want the occasion to pass by without recognizing the daily, invaluable work of our School Resource Officers.

Thank you to our SROs for keeping our district secure and offering a strong connection between our village and our school. Please join us in thanking our SROs!

Congratulations to senior, Ava Coen, and junior, Reagan Buchs for winning the American Legion Americanism in Government Contest. The competition consisted of a civics test with an essay component. Mr. Tim Haynes from Legion Post 574 presented the pair of Trojans their award certificates, earning them a place in a forthcoming District competition. The pair is pictured with Mrs. Lee, McKinley's Government teacher.

What We Are Learning:
Mrs. Lee’s Government students put what they’ve been learning in the classroom into action with mock trials. The classroom was transformed into a courtroom as students played their assigned roles of lawyers, a judge, witness, jury, defendant and more!

We are proud of how B.L. Miller's Student Senate led a learning experience to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Student Senate distributed papers to K-3 students that asked them what their dream would be, similar to what MLK spoke about. The 4-6 grade levels were prompted with the following questions about meeting MLK: "I would tell him..., I would ask him..., I would show him..., and I would thank him..." Student Senate also presented a video about MLK that each homeroom watched before beginning the contest.

Contest participants received a treat for trying the contest, and the winners get a coupon for a free food item from the BL Mini Mart (the Student Senate store).

Congratulations to the winners:

Let's take last week's energy from our Olympic start to the second semester and keep it going! Pictured is one of our team events from last week, "paper plate speed skating".

In case you missed it (ICYMI): Our students have been busy during this short week! B.L. Miller's Student Senate honored MLK Jr. Day by volunteering in the Trojan Care Closet. Students spent two hours helping Mrs. Dennis organize items in tribute to Martin Luther King's call to service.

Meanwhile, McKinley students kicked off the second semester with Olympic-themed group activities, small group discussions, brain games, and a school-wide dodgeball tournament. Stay tuned for more coverage of Sebring's busy week!

Ms. Luca’s second grade artists are creating fun winter art! Students are painting self-portraits of the time-honored winter tradition of catching snowflakes on their tongue. Take a look at their work:

Our kindergarteners partnered with Mrs. Mathias’ seniors for a special collaborative project inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ story, “The Gift of Words”.
The story was read aloud to the group. Then kindergarteners and seniors worked in small groups to talk about the power of joyful, meaningful words, especially during the holiday season. Together, they created Christmas tree crafts decorated with the words they chose.

This special collaboration fostered rich vocabulary skills, strengthened communication skills, and supported speaking and listening skills as students of all ages share, explain, and create with language. It was a wonderful way to connect learners across grade levels while celebrating kindness, community, and the impact our words can have.
